How this is worked out

The range runs from the lowest to the highest figure that Dublin bathroom firms and a price guide publish for that kind of job (LN Bathroom Renovations, Kev Decor, Dublin Plumber 24hrs, Tile Merchant's Dublin column). "+" means one of them gives no top figure. Moving things adds Kev Decor's €1,500 to €3,000 for layout changes. The sum is ours. Prices read on 3 November 2026. Kev Decor adds no VAT; the others mostly don't say. It's an estimate, never a quote.

What's involved

From bath to walk-in shower

  1. Strip out: the bath, the panel, the tiles round it.
  2. The waste: a shower waste goes where the bath waste was, or a new run if it moves.
  3. Tanking: the floor and walls of the shower area waterproofed before tiling.
  4. A low tray or a level floor, a fixed glass screen, the shower valve and head.
  5. Tiles, silicone where the tiles meet the floor, and the final clean.

Kev Decor's Rialto job, Dublin 8: a 200 kg steel bath out and a walk-in shower in, with new stud walls, insulation, cement boards, full tanking and tiling, about €13,000 in 8 days.

The hot water

Electric, mixer or pumped

  • Electric shower: heats its own water. Needs its own circuit from the fuse board.
  • Mixer shower: from a cylinder or a combi boiler. Pressure depends on what feeds it.
  • Pumped shower: a pump boosts a gravity-fed cylinder.

Any new circuit is electrical work: by law a Registered Electrical Contractor does it and gives you a completion certificate (CRU).

Grants

If it's for getting about safely

An accessible shower is one of the works the Housing Adaptation Grant for Disabled People covers, up to €40,000 (South Dublin County Council). The Mobility Aids Grant, up to €8,000, covers grab rails (Department of Housing). Approval comes first: start the work before it and you lose the grant (South Dublin County Council). Accessible bathrooms and grants has the detail for all four Dublin councils.

Before anyone comes to price it

  • Measure the room, wall to wall, and the window and door.
  • Decide if the toilet and shower stay where they are. Moving them adds pipework.
  • Check where the hot water comes from: a cylinder, a combi boiler or an electric shower.
  • In an apartment, ask the management company about access, lifts, working hours and parking for the skip.
  • Ask for a written price that lists the strip-out, tanking, tiling, fittings, electrics and VAT.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much is a walk-in shower in Dublin?

€3,500 to €6,000 to convert a bath, on Kev Decor's figures, in 3 to 5 days.

Can I get a grant for a walk-in shower?

Yes, if it's needed for a disability: an accessible shower is one of the works the Housing Adaptation Grant covers, up to €40,000 (South Dublin County Council). The council approves it first.

Does a walk-in shower need tanking?

Yes. One Dublin firm calls professional waterproofing non-negotiable and prices it at €300 to €800 (LN Bathroom Renovations).

Should I keep a bath somewhere?

If it's the only bathroom and there are small children in the house, think about it. A shower-bath, or a bath in the en-suite, keeps both.
